Google to defend generative AI users from copyright claims

Google said on Thursday that it will defend users of generative artificial-intelligence systems in its Google Cloud and Workspace platforms if they are accused of intellectual property violations, joining Microsoft, Adobe and other companies that have made similar pledges. Major Technology companies like Google have been investing heavily in generative AI and racing to incorporate it into their products. Prominent writers, illustrators and other copyright owners have said in several lawsuits that both the use of their work to train the AI systems and the content the systems create violate their rights. "To our knowledge, Google is the first in the industry to offer a comprehensive, two-pronged approach to indemnity" that specifically covers both types of claims , a company spokesperson said. Google said its new policy applies to software, including its Vertex AI development platform and Duet AI system, which generates text and images i...

Meta starts rolling out generative AI tools for all advertisers

Social media giant Meta Platforms said on Wednesday that it has started rolling out generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can create content like image backgrounds and variations of written text for all advertisers . The company started testing these tools in May, giving access to a select group of advertisers in a "testing playground". The tools will be available in Meta's Ads Manager and their rollout will be completed next year. The rollout marks the Facebook and Instagram owner's first foray into bundling generative AI Technology into its products for mining vast stores of past data to generate new content like prose, art and software code. Last week, the company said businesses will soon be able to use AI for business messaging on Messenger and WhatsApp to engage with customers. Meta's portfolio of AI products includes its language model "Llama 2" and an AI chatbot called Meta AI that can generate text responses ...

Adobe adds generative AI features to Photoshop software

Adobe Inc on Tuesday said it is adding artificial intelligence (AI) Technology for generating imagery into Photoshop, its flagship software for editing images. The San Jose, California-based company said it was the start of a major push to add such AI technologies to its suite of programs aimed at creative professionals. While programs such as OpenAI's Dall-E have captured the public imagination by transforming text prompts into images, they have not yet seen wide use by big corporations because of legal questions around the data used to develop the systems. Adobe has sought to address those concerns with a core Technology system it calls Firefly, which was specifically created with legal-to-use image data and which Adobe says can be used in commercial settings. Adobe has been testing the system for about six weeks on a standalone website and on Tuesday said it will add features based on it to Photoshop, perhaps the company's best known product. One new f...
