‘Landmine’: Deadly hidden danger at Australian beach prompts warning

A viral picture of a deadly find on an Australian beach has prompted a warning for beach walkers. The image is of the world’s most venomous fish — the stonefish — which can lie dormant out of water for hours and, if stepped on, is capable of delivering excruciating pain and, in worst cases, death. “Can you see it?” the post on Facebook said on Monday. “If you’re at the beach , take care.” Watch the latest news and stream for free on 7plus >> “Make sure your little ones know not to touch anything that’s not an empty shell on the beach !” one Facebook user commented on the post. Stonefish look like rocks or lumps of coral, and have 13 sharp, hypodermic needle-like spines which protrude from their backs and can inject a highly toxic venom. The fish do not move when they are threatened — instead they erect their dorsal fin spines.
