Potato plant radiation sensors could one day monitor radiation in areas surrounding power plants

While expanding nuclear energy production would provide carbon-free power and can help countries around the world meet their climate goals, nuclear energy could also come with some inherent risk. Radioactive pollution damages the environment, and it’s nearly impossible to detect without specialized equipment. But what if plants growing in the facility’s surrounding area could detect radiation pollution? The mechanical radiation detectors currently used, called dosimeters, aren’t completely reliable – during previous nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl, they’ve failed or been buried under rubble. Our team of plant scientists at the University of Tennessee wanted to figure out alternatives to these mechanical radiation sensors to help address their historic failures, so we decided to build a plant-based sensor for gamma radiation. The sensor, called a phytosensor, is a potato plant that glows fluorescent green when exposed to radiation. Dosimeters sen...

Watch this eerily silent vision of the future — where offices are filled with weird, AI-powered robots

Smiling humanoid robots have been shown to sort objects, drop off packages and even tidy up a child's toys in eerie new footage. The near-silent video, released by robotics company 1X, shows dozens of the company's EVE robots performing these various tasks in a large test environment that simulated office spaces and a living room. The demonstration showcased the EVE robots ' ability to learn and perform various tasks autonomously just by watching footage, 1X representatives said in a statement . 1X eventually wants to provide companies with a supply of physical labor using its androids.  Related: Watch Elon Musk's Optimus Gen 2 robot in action The company claimed it trained the robots using a neural network — a collection of artificial intelligence (AI) machine-learning models organized in such a way as to mimic how the human brain is structured. A neural network comprises artificial neurons that replicate the architecture of the human brain to learn from data, a...

China targets 50% growth in computing power in race against US

China aims to boost the country’s aggregate computing power by more than 50% by 2025, according to a plan released by authorities on Monday, as Beijing tightens its focus on supercomputing and artificial intelligence innovations. The plan comes amid rising competition between China and the US in many high-tech areas ranging from semiconductors and supercomputers to AI, including US export controls on chipmaking equipment. The plan, released by six departments in Beijing including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has set a target for China’s total computing power to reach 300 EFLOPS by 2025. EFLOPS, equal to one quintillion floating-point operations per second, measures a computer's speed. The MIIT revealed in August that China’s computing power has reached 197 EFLOPS this year, up from 180 EFLOPS in 2022. The ministry said it ranks China as second behind the United States, but did not elaborate on th...
