How a secret software change allowed FTX to use client money

In mid-2020, FTX's chief engineer made a secret change to the cryptocurrency exchange’s software. He tweaked the code to exempt Alameda Research, a hedge fund owned by FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, from a feature on the trading platform that would have automatically sold off Alameda's assets if it was losing too much borrowed money. In a note explaining the change, the engineer, Nishad Singh, emphasized that FTX should never sell Alameda's positions. "Be extra careful not to liquidate,” Singh wrote in the comment in the platform's code, which it showed he helped author. Reuters reviewed the code base, which has not been previously reported. The exemption allowed Alameda to keep borrowing funds from FTX irrespective of the value of the collateral securing those loans. That tweak in the code got the attention of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which charged Bankman-Fried with fraud on Tuesday. The SEC said the tweak meant Ala...

Gemini is intended to com Pet e with OpenAI's GPT-4 model, according to the report. For Google, the stakes of Gemini's launch are high. Google has intensified investments in generative AI this year as it plays catch-up after Microsoft-backed OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT last year took the tech world by storm. Adobe adds generative AI features to Photoshop software

Adobe Inc on Tuesday said it is adding artificial intelligence (AI) Technology for generating imagery into Photoshop, its flagship software for editing images. The San Jose, California-based company said it was the start of a major push to add such AI technologies to its suite of programs aimed at creative professionals. While programs such as OpenAI's Dall-E have captured the public imagination by transforming text prompts into images, they have not yet seen wide use by big corporations because of legal questions around the data used to develop the systems. Adobe has sought to address those concerns with a core Technology system it calls Firefly, which was specifically created with legal-to-use image data and which Adobe says can be used in commercial settings. Adobe has been testing the system for about six weeks on a standalone website and on Tuesday said it will add features based on it to Photoshop, perhaps the company's best known product. One new f...
