Google to defend generative AI users from copyright claims

Google said on Thursday that it will defend users of generative artificial-intelligence systems in its Google Cloud and Workspace platforms if they are accused of intellectual property violations, joining Microsoft, Adobe and other companies that have made similar pledges. Major Technology companies like Google have been investing heavily in generative AI and racing to incorporate it into their products. Prominent writers, illustrators and other copyright owners have said in several lawsuits that both the use of their work to train the AI systems and the content the systems create violate their rights. Meta's Instagram, Facebook to charge EU users for ad-free

Meta Platforms is looking to introduce ad-free subscription plans for Instagram and Facebook users in Europe, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Several pricing plans were discussed, but the 10 euro ($10.49) per month plan is the most feasible, one of them said, while the other source said it will be implemented in the coming months. The proposal is an attempt by Meta to comply with European Union regulations that threaten to curb its ability to personalize ads for users without their consent and hurt its major revenue source. Offering a choice between a free, ad-supported plan and a paid subscription might lead to users opting for the former, helping Meta comply with regulations without affecting its ad business. On mobile devices, the price for a single account would jump to roughly 13 euros because Meta would factor in commissions charged by Apple's and Google's app stores, the second source said. In comparison, Netflix charges 7.99 euros...

Meta may allow Facebook, Instagram users in EU to pay

Meta Platforms is considering paid versions of Facebook and Instagram with no advertisements for users residing in the European Union (EU) as a response to scrutiny from regulators, the New York Times reported on Friday. Those who pay for the subscriptions would not see ads while Meta would also continue to offer free versions of the apps with ads in the EU, the report said, citing three people with knowledge of the plans. The report added that the possible move may help Meta combat privacy concerns and other scrutiny from the EU as it would give users an alternative to the company's ad-based services, which rely on analyzing people's data. Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The social media behemoth has been in the crosshairs of EU antitrust regulators and lost a fight in July against a 2019 German order that barred it from collecting users ' data without consent. It is unclear how much the paid versions of the app woul...

Twitter to limit number of DMs unverified users can send

Alienating users by the day, Twitter is yet again intending to make the platform less friendly to its users with a new policy that would limit the amount of messages un verified users can send in a day. The company claims the move is motivated by the sharp tick in spam messages on the social platform. Just this month, Twitter added new Settings option for Messages which directed DMs from accounts people follow to their primary inbox and DMs from verified users they don't follow to their message request inbox. The platform says it noted a 70% reduction in spam messages after this new addition to Settings. Meta's Threads swiftly signs up 30 million users

Meta's Threads racked up more than 30 million sign-ups within about 18 hours of its launch, emerging as the first real threat to Elon Musk-owned Twitter, as it took advantage of its access to billions of Instagram users and a similar look to that of its rival. Dubbed as the "Twitter-Killer", Threads was the top free app on Apple's App Store in the UK and the US on Thursday. Its arrival comes after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter's Musk have traded barbs for months, even threatening to fight each other in a real-life mixed martial arts cage match in Las Vegas. "The cage match has started, and Zuckerberg delivered a major blow. In many ways, it's exactly what you'd expect from Meta: Stellar execution and an easy-to-navigate user interface," Insider Intelligence principal analyst Jasmine Enberg said. Twitter backtracks on requiring users to log in to view tweets

Several days after Twitter disabled tweet views for users not logged in to their accounts, the company quietly backtracked from its decision. Users are able to see individual tweets without being logged in to their Twitter accounts. According to Elon Musk, the tweet decision was a “temporary emergency measure." He said, "We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users ". A similar explanation was provided by Twitter over its decision to limit the number of tweets users can view in a day, saying that it was to “detect and eliminate bots and other bad actors that are harming the platform.” While no comment has been released on the return to their decision, Twitter has quietly enabled tweet views for non-logged-in users just as Meta releases its Twitter com Pet itor, Threads. Millions of Gmail users warned over scam exploiting potential bug in Google feature

The little blue tick isn’t just for Twitter, the verification checkmark was also rolled out by Gmail in 2021 — and it hasn’t taken scammers long to exploit the process. Cyber threat actors have managed to create verified accounts by impersonating real Business es, making it even harder to detect email scams sent directly to Gmail inboxes. When you hover over a sender’s business logo and blue checkmark in your inbox, a small box will pop up reading: “The sender of this email has verified that they own (business domain URL) and the logo in the profile image.” Watch the latest News on Channel 7 or stream for free on 7plus >> But look closely at that URL because an illegitimate domain name could be an indication that it’s not actually the trusted sender who they say they are. Twitter launches encrypted DMs for verified users

Twitter is rolling out its encrypted direct messages, promised to users for quite some time, but with some limitations for users . The feature is currently only available to verified users and Twitter Blue subscribers, who can use the privacy encryption for DMs between two verified users. According to the company, the encryption won't support group messages, or any kind of media, except links. Moreover, users won't be able to report encrypted messages but would have to report the account as a whole. The level of privacy encryption offered by Twitter makes it less secure in comparison to other apps that have the same feature. Vietnam to require social media users to verify identity

Vietnam is preparing to make it mandatory for social media users of both local and foreign platforms to verify their identity in a bid to rein in online scams, state media reported on Monday. The measure, part of the Telecommunications Law Amendment to be issued by the end of this year, will enable law enforcement agencies to track down offenders using social media to break the law, state-run Voice of Vietnam (VOV) newspaper reported. "There are times the authorities can identify social media account holders that violate the laws but cannot track them down because those criminals use cross-border applications," VOV cited information deputy minister Nguyen Thanh Lam as saying. "Unverified accounts, no matter on local or foreign platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, will be dealt with." According to the report, both individual and organisational users would be subject to the measure. However not all providers currently offer identity verification in ...
