Why Tottenham signed Lucas Bergvall

"Is this really true?" That was the thought rattling around Lucas Bergvall's head after he marked his debut for Swedish top-flight side Djurgardens with a goal. One short year later, the prodigious midfielder signed for Tottenham Hotspur on his 18th birthday, finally ending the torrent of wild rumours surrounding his future. Djurgarden's sporting director Bo Andersson was certainly relieved. "I don't think there has ever been so much speculation about a player either in Swedish or Scandinavian Football before," he gushed. Here's why Spurs fought off Barcelona and the rest of Europe to ensure that the Swedish teenager will be lining up in north London next season. David Datro Fofana came off the bench to score twice and earn Burnley a 2-2 draw at home to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday. The 21-year-old recently joined the Clarets on loan from Chelsea for the remainder of the season and has already made a major impact with two goals as a second-half substitute against the Cottagers. First-half goals from Rodrigo Muniz and Joao Palhinha saw the visitors race into an early lead and they appeared to be cruising to victory until Fofana's late contributions. Lorenz Assignon's floated cross was misjudged by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, allowing Fofana to rise and head home, setting up a grandstand finish at Turf Moor with 20 minutes left to play. With 91 minutes on the clock, Fofana bundled home a driven ball from Wilson Odobert to send the home fans crazy. Mauricio Pochettino explains reason for Armando Broja loan exit

Image
Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea have enough depth in the squad to cope without Armando Broja after the striker joined Fulham on loan for the remainder of the season. With Broja behind Nicolas Jackson in the pecking order and Chelsea planning to sign a new striker in the summer, the decision was made to encourage offers for the 22-year-old academy graduate, who was initially valued at £50m. Chelsea accepted no team would meet such a demand late in the window and ultimately agreed to a straight loan with Fulham - a move Pochettino believes should not impact his squad over the next six months. "I think it is important to recover Christoph [Nkunku] and today arrived Nico Jackson [back from the Africa Cup of Nations], and then also sometimes we forget but Deivid Washington is here with us," Pochettino told Friday's press conference. "The options we have up front, I think, is enough." Broja has joined Fulham / Robin Jones/GettyImages Chelsea are expected to spend...

The need for identity Ten Hag's second season has been underwhelming / Alex Livesey - Danehouse/GettyImages Ten Hag has made no secret that he has somewhat reneged on his vision for United this season due to their injury list and admitted this side is incapable of playing the free-flowing possession-based style he was famed for at Ajax. Those excuses were put to shame by Postecoglou, who similarly has missed key men for the last couple of months and Tottenham's style has not changed. They wer...

Tottenham's 2024 January transfer window wishlist

Image
Tottenham began the 2023/24 season in euphoric form after a dismal end to the previous campaign and the exit of all-time leading goalscorer Harry Kane, and while the mood has soured with injuries and suspensions aplenty, the future looks bright under Ange Postecoglou. During the opening months of the season, Spurs showed their new-look starting XI and style of play would keep them in contention for European qualification places, but the masses of wounded players saw the side's form dip with a run of five games without a Premier League win. The areas lacking depth were severely exposed in losses to Chelsea, Wolves, Aston Villa and West Ham United, but the 2024 January transfer window will offer Postecoglou and his team behind the scenes the chance to improve the squad, especially with some key players jetting off mid-season for international tournaments.
