AI threat demands new approach to security designs

OTTAWA: The potential threat posed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) means safeguards need to be built in to systems from the start rather than tacked on later, a top US official said on Monday. "We've normalized a world where Technology products come off the line full of vulnerabilities and then consumers are expected to patch those vulnerabilities. We can't live in that world with AI," said Jen Easterly, director of the U.S. Cyber security and Infrastructure Security Agency. "It is too powerful, it is moving too fast," she said in a telephone interview after holding talks in Ottawa with Sami Khoury, head of Canada's Centre for Cyber Security. Canada facing rising threat from cyberattacks, defence minister

Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand said on Saturday that the country's critical infrastructure was increasingly being targeted by cyberattacks, posing a significant threat to the economy of the world's fourth-largest crude oil producer. The US State Department warned last month that China was capable of launching cyber attacks against oil and gas pipelines and rail systems, after researchers discovered a Chinese hacking group had been spying on such networks. In an interview on the sidelines of an Asian security summit in Singapore, Anand said there had been an increase in cyber attacks across North America, although she did not attribute the strikes to any state-sponsored actors. "We have seen attacks on critical infrastructure in our country and we are very conscious to advise Canadian organisations and Canadian companies to take mitigation measures," Anand said. The Polish woman claiming to be Madeleine McCann was forced to delete her viral Instagram account after receiving death threats, it has been revealed. Julia Faustyna is now in the United States, according to an Instagram post by her spokesperson, psychic medium and private investigator Dr Fia Johansson. The threats started on Snapchat, Johansson said, before spreading to other social media platforms including Instagram and Facebook. Faustyna faced “a severe and credible death threat ” including a “price on her head”.
